Goin' back

I'm goin' back to where the winds howl my name,
I'm goin' back to where my footsteps echo on the old wooden walkways,
I'm goin' back to where my spirit lies...

Margaret de Clare (Sturgis/Barlow)

Wouldn't ya know that one of my ancestors was the first woman to be imprisoned in the Tower of London?  Well, yes...it was Margaret de Clare (and my husband wonders why I'm the way I am...sigh...)

Margaret lived from 1287 until 1333 or 1334.  She was styled as Baroness Badlesmere on 26 October 1309.  She had two husbands:
She married firstly before the year 1303, Gilbert de Umfraville, son of Gilbert de Umphraville, Earl of Angus, and Elizabeth Comyn. Upon their marriage, the Earl of Angus granted Gilbert and Margaret the manors of Hambleton and Market Overton; however, when Gilbert died childless prior to 1307, the manors passed to Margaret.
On an unrecorded date earlier than 30 June 1308,[3] she married secondly, Bartholomew de Badlesmere, an English soldier and court official who was afterwards created 1st Baron Badlesmere by writ of summons. He had held the post of Governor of Bristol Castle since 1307, and from then onwards proceeded to accumulate many renumerative grants and offices. Margaret's marriage to Badlesmere had been arranged by her brother-in-law, Baron Clifford; Badlesmere having been one of Clifford's retainers during the Scottish Wars in the early 1300s. Clifford was later killed at the Battle of Bannockburn, where Badlesmere also fought.

She was a granddaughter of Richard de Clare and she had two stepfathers:

Her father died on 29 August 1287, when she was almost five months of age. Her mother married her second husband, Nicholas Avenel sometime afterwards, but the exact date of this marriage is not known. Between 11 December 1291 and 16 February 1292, Margaret acquired another stepfather when her mother married her third husband, Adam de Cretynges.
(Same source as above)

She lived in Chilham Castle (see photo)

Also, from Wikipedia:

She was arrested and subsequently imprisoned in the Tower of London for the duration of a year from November 1321 to November 1322, making her the first female prisoner in the Tower's history. She was jailed on account of having ordered an armed assault onIsabella of FranceQueen consort of King Edward II of England. Before Margaret had instructed her archers to fire upon Isabella and her escort, she had refused the Queen admittance to Leeds Castle where her husband, Baron Badlesmere held the post of governor, but which was legally the property of Queen Isabella as part of the latter's dowry. Margaret surrendered the castle on 31 October 1321 after it was besieged by the King's forces using ballistas. Edward's capture of Leeds Castle was the catalyst which led to theDespenser War in the Welsh Marches and the north of England.  Margaret was visiting Cheshunt Manor in Hertfordshire in 1319, when she was taken hostage by a group of sixty people, both men and women.[6] Her captors demanded a ransom of £100 for her release. She was held prisoner for one night before her prompt rescue the following day by the King's favourite, Hugh Despenser the Younger.[6] Hugh was married to Margaret's first cousin, Eleanor de Clare, eldest daughter of Gilbert de Clare, 7th Earl of Gloucester and Joan of Acre (this also made Eleanor a first cousin of Edward II). The King ordered the arrest and imprisonment of 20 of Margaret's kidnappers; they all, however, were eventually pardoned.

Upon her release, she entered a convent house and apparently behaved herself...Her husband, however,...
Badlesmere was attainted and hanged, drawn and quartered at Blean in the vicinity of Canterbury. His severed head was then attached to a pole placed on Burgate, one of the principal Roman gates into Canterbury's city walls....oh dear!  Another ancestor who was drawn and quartered (I have quite a few!)

Elizabeth de Bohun (Stugis/Barlow)

Elizabeth de Bohun was Elizabeth FitzAlan's mother.  She lived from 1345 until 1385 (40 years).  She was the wife of Sir Richard FitzAlan, the 11th Earl of Arundel, who was executed by Richard II for high treason (London, 1397).  Hmmm....seems she was bound to the Earl when she was very young (about 9 years old)...I'm sure it was to bring two powerful and wealthy families together (what else is new?)  Her grandmother was Elizabeth (Isabel) Plantagenet, a daughter of Edward I and granddaughter of Henry III.

Elizabeth's parents died when she was young, both were gone by the time she was ten. She became the wife of Sir Richard FitzAlan, by papal dispensation, on 28 September 1359. Richard was one of the wealthiest and powerful lords of his time, Elizabeth enjoyed prestige and privilege as his wife, second only to the Queen, the Duchess of Lancaster, and the Countess of Buckingham. Their marriage bound two of the most powerful families in England together, along with Elizabeth's brother's marriage to Richard's sister.

Elizabeth died at the age of 35, and her husband would remarry to Phillipa de Mortimer, the widow of Sir John de Hastings, before being executed for high treason against King Richard.

Elizabeth had a half-brother Roger Mortimer, 2nd Earl of March by her mother's first marriage to Sir Edmund Mortimer.

Her paternal grandparents were Humphrey de Bohun, 4th Earl of Hereford and Elizabeth of Rhuddlan, daughter of King Edward I of England and Eleanor of Castile. Her maternal grandparents were Bartholomew de Badlesmere, 1st Baron Badlesmere and Margaret de Clare.

Lady Elizabeth's parents both died when she was young, her mother having died in 1356, and her father in 1360.

Eleanor of Lancaster (Eleanor Plantagenet)

Eleanor of Lancaster had two husbands:  John de Beaumont and Richard FitzAlan (10th Earl of Arundel).  It is from the second marriage that my children and I are descended.  She was  the fifth daughter of Henry, 3rd Earl of Lancaster and Maud Chaworth.

From Wikipedia:
Eleanor died at Arundel and was buried at Lewes Priory in LewesSussex, England. Her husband survived her by four years, and was buried beside her; in his will Richard requests to be buried "near to the tomb of Eleanor de Lancaster, my wife; and I desire that my tomb be no higher than hers, that no men at arms, horses, hearse, or other pomp, be used at my funeral, but only five torches...as was about the corpse of my wife, be allowed."
Their tomb is the subject of the Philip Larkin poem "An Arundel Tomb."

This memorial is dedicated to my ancestor Eleanor of Lancaster, Countess of Arundel. She was the fifth daughter of Henry Plantagenet, 3rd Earl of Lancaster and Maud Chaworth.
On November 6, 1330, she married John de Beaumont, 2nd Lord Beaumont, son of Henry Beaumont, 4th Earl of Buchan and his wife Alice Comyn. They had two children:
Henry Beaumont, 3rd Lord Beaumont, (4 April 1340 – 17 June 1369), married as her first husband, Margaret de Vere (died 15 June 1398), by whom he had issue.
Matilda Beaumont (died July 1367), married Hugh de Courtenay.
Eleanor was a lady-in-waiting to Queen Philippa, and was in service to her in Ghent when her son Henry was born. John de Beaumont died in a tournament on April 14, 1342
On February 5, 1344 at Ditton Church, Stoke Poges, Buckinghamshire, she married Richard FitzAlan, 10th Earl of Arundel.
The children of Eleanor's second marriage were:
Richard (1346 - 1397), who succeeded as Earl of Arundel
John Fitzalan (bef 1349 - 1379)
Thomas Arundel, Archbishop of Canterbury (c. 1345 - February 19, 1413)
Joan Fitzalan (1347/1348 - April 7, 1419), married Humphrey de Bohun, 7th Earl of Hereford
Alice Fitzalan (1350 - March 17, 1416), married Thomas Holland, 2nd Earl of Kent (Thomas Holand)
Mary Fitzalan (died August 29, 1396), married John Le Strange, 4th Lord Strange of Blackmere, by whom she had issue
Eleanor Fitzalan (1356 - before 1366)
Eleanor died at Arundel and was buried at Lewes Priory in Lewes, Sussex, England. Her husband was buried beside her; in his will Richard requests to be buried "near to the tomb of Eleanor de Lancaster, my wife; and I desire that my tomb be no higher than hers, that no men at arms, horses, hearse, or other pomp, be used at my funeral, but only five torches...as was about the corpse of my wife, be allowed.

There is conflicting information on place of burial. Some information has the couple buried at Lewes Priory while their tombs appear to be located at Chichester Cathedral.
Perhaps they were first interred in Lewes Priory and later their tomb was relocated after the dissolution of churches.

Here's some info about her on Find a Grave:

Birth: 1371
Arundel
West Sussex, England
Death: Jul. 8, 1425
Wighill
North Yorkshire, England

Elizabeth Fitzalan Duchess of Norfolk, was the daughter of Richard Fitz-Alan, Earl of Arundel, and Elizabeth de Bohun. Married Sir William Montague; Thomas Mowbry, Duke of Norfolk; Sir Robert Goushill; and Sir Gerald Usflete. Elizabeth Fitz-Alan was descended from King Edward I through her mother's ancestry, and Edmund Plantagenet through her father's line. She is buried in a tomb in Hoveringham Church in Nottinghamshire next to her third husband Sir Robert Goushill who died at the Battle of Shrewsbury in 1403. Robert Goushill was knighted by King Henry IV the day of the battle. Wounded, he was murdered by his servant on the Shrewsbury battlefield for his valuables. The servant was later identified and hung for his crime. Many Americans including Franklin D. Roosevelt can trace Plantagenet ancestry through Elizabeth Fitz-Alan's daughters Joan and Elizabeth Goushill.

This would be Elizabeth and Sir Robert Guishill (also an ancestor)...
Her father was Richard Fitz Alan, 11th Earl of Arundel. He was arrested for opposing Richard II (high treason against the king) and was beheaded after his trial (a common practice for some of my ancestors, especially those who opposed kings of England!)

Arundel Castle

She married Sir Robert Goushill (3rd husband) and I'm descended from Joan Goushill, on my John Sturgis/Deborah Barlow line.   Elizabeth had a double line of descent to the Plantagenet kings of England.  Through her mother, her lines went back to King Edward I and through her father her lines went back to Henry III.  During her lifetime, she would live through the reigns of Richard II, Henry IV, Henry V, and into the reign of Henry VI.

Oh, and here's another tidbit:

Presidents James Madison, John Tyler and Zachary Taylor, explorer Capt. Meriwether Lewis, Gen. George S. Patton, and actor Marlon Brando are descendants of Robert Goushill and Elizabeth FitzAlan.

AND, From Elizabeth (these would be cousins, since they didn't have Goushill as their father...)

Confederate General Robert E. Lee, President Thomas Jefferson, Gen. Douglas MacArthur and Francis Scott Key are descendants of Thomas Mowbray and Elizabeth FitzAlan. (also from rootsweb)
